Both can and be able to can be used to talk about ability. In some cases they are interchangeable. But the difference is that I can express Can in two ways Can and Could but Be able to I can express this in present (am, are, is) in past (was, were) and in the future (will), also we can say that Be able to ismore sure or more stronger than Can. However almost of people prefer to use Can some say because is mor common or more shorter.
Exampes:
I can live in Mexico. (It refers to I can do it, it is a posibility or a like)
I am able to live in Mexico. (I am apt to face any problen and assume it, maybe can be difficult but I have to do it)
Both can and be able to can be used to talk about ability. In some cases they are interchangeable.
